Indian Ocean Territories

Australia’s Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) comprise of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

More than 60 per cent of Christmas Island is national park. The island is 2,605 km north-west of Perth and 490 kilometres from Jakarta (Indonesia).

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are a group of 27 low-lying coral islands that form two atolls. The islands are located 2,935 km north-west of Perth and 985 km from Christmas Island.

The Indian Ocean Territories Regional Development Organisation (IOT RDO) is funded by the Australian Government to deliver the RDA program for Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

This funding arrangement is administered by the Australian Government's Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.

The IOT RDO is working with key stakeholders to facilitate sustainable development in the region, and to build strong and confident local economies on both Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
