Priority 1: Economic infrastructure

What skills/experience will be needed from future committee members to achieve this priority?

  • Understand how governments and the private sector plan and budget for infrastructure.
  • Understand business case development.
  • Have economic analysis skills.
  • Have social benefit analysis skills.
  • Understand regional infrastructure needs.
  • Strategic thinking skills and the ability to put regional priorities ahead of local priorities.
  • Government relations/advocacy and people skills.

Priority 2: Industry diversification

  • Capture growth opportunities from existing industry sectors—agriculture, education, mining, tourism.
  • Assess and target new industry opportunities.

What skills/experience will be needed from future committee members to achieve this priority?

  • Experience in any of these industries within the region.
  • An understanding of innovation and industry development.
  • Understanding of how to attract federal, state and local government support for new initiatives.
  • Understanding of how to attract private sector investment.
  • Strategic Planning Skills.
  • Government relations/advocacy and people skills.

Priority 3: Community infrastructure and services

What skills/experience will be needed from future committee members to achieve this priority?

  • Local and regional knowledge of community needs—eg lifestyle infrastructure and services, health, education, housing, aged care, public transport, community services.
  • Experience in managing, judging, advising or writing applications for grant programs.
  • Government relations/advocacy and people skills.

Geography

Is geographic representation important to achieve the RDA committee's priorities?

  • Yes.

Which geographic areas require greater representation from future members?

  • RDA covers 15 local governments across North and North West Queensland including Boulia. Ideally, the committee will be made up of members who live in the Gulf region, Western region, Mid-west region between Townsville and Mount Isa, Townsville and the North Queensland coastal region.

Other Comments

It is important to have a diversity of skills, experience, backgrounds, gender and ages on the committee.

For operational purposes, ideally the committee will have at least one member with legal skills and one member with financial/accounting skills.

9.1% of the region's population is indigenous and it is important for the RDA committee to have indigenous representation on the committee.
