Brisbane City Skills Needs

Priority 1: A More Globally focused, Sustainable and Stronger Cross-regionally Connected Economy

  • High value industry growth sectors that collaborate locally to compete globally
  • Innovation through new ideas, products and services relevant to global markets
  • Businesses and startups that are entrepreneurial
  • A Brisbane-led approach to building a stronger, interconnected regional economy
  • A ‘whole of region' collaborative approach in the delivery of targeted and effective business development programs and support services

What skills/experience will be needed from future committee members to achieve this priority?

A working knowledge of any of the following areas:

  • different industry sectors and specialisations
  • entrepreneurialism and innovation
  • the digital economy and advances in technology as applied to managing in a highly competitive and global environment
  • regional and global competitiveness including exports and industry clustering
  • economic development
  • Expertise in fundraising or links to securing corporate sponsorships
  • Expertise in regional planning
  • Involvement in/access to economic/industry/community networks

Expertise in/demonstrated knowledge of broader cross-regional, statewide, intercity, national or international economic or industry conditions/applications, eg may involve working in a position and/or for an organisation with a geographical scope that is broader than Brisbane or for a local government organisation.

Priority 2: Projects and Infrastructure to drive Economic Development

Industry and workforce capability to capitalise on opportunities provided by major infrastructure projects, such as the Queen's Wharf project

  • Delivery of productive local projects and community infrastructure

What skills/experience will be needed from future committee members to achieve this priority?
A broad knowledge and awareness of:

  • the needs and challenges of small to medium size enterprises and startup businesses
  • transport and logistics and other infrastructure needs that drive and/or support economic development
  • economic development and the drivers of economic growth
  • Involvement in/access to economic/industry/community networks
  • Marketing/communications experience including social media

Priority 3: Business and Talent Attraction and Retention

  • Investment attraction, to encourage businesses to set up or relocate to Brisbane
  • An enviable lifestyle to attract skills and retain our best and brightest

What skills/experience will be needed from future committee members to achieve this priority?
Expertise in:

  • regional/urban/social planning
  • Marketing/communications

A working knowledge of any of the following areas:

  • high value/high growth industry sectors
  • entrepreneurialism and innovation ecosystems
  • industry clustering
  • general economic conditions

A strategic overview and understanding of issues relating to skills development, different industry sectors and their workforce issues, human capital issues, education and training regimes.
