RDA Sydney Hosts Realising a Better Sydney in 2051 Workshop

RDA Sydney (News South Wales), with the assistance of 10 000 Friends of Greater Sydney and industry association Consult Australia, hosted the Realising a better Sydney in 2051 workshop on Wednesday 22 August 2012.
RDA Sydney Executive Officer Bob Germaine welcomed on behalf of the partners over 80 enthusiastic participants to the event, which included leading thinkers in urban development, business, transport and infrastructure, education and health, as well as State and Local Government representatives, academics and community interest groups.
The workshop provided the opportunity for participants to develop a new vision for Sydney in 2051 and identify the reforms required to realise that vision.
Mr Germaine said the Realising a better Sydney for 2051 workshop was critical to driving the case for a fresh approach to Sydney supported by real leadership and an ambitious vision.
“The NSW Government is producing a number of new long-term plans for Sydney, particularly for transport and infrastructure,” Mr Germaine said.
“However, there remains an urgent need for a clear overarching plan supported by the community to guide future policy directions. The need for this plan is underscored by the seniority and interest supporting a better vision for Sydney in 2051.”
Workshop participants considered the implications arising from three broad scenarios exploring Sydney’s future, which resulted in the selection of a preferred vision for Sydney alongside recommendations for its realisation.
“This workshop enabled participants to identify the critical steps required to move Sydney beyond the status quo; to ensure a better quality of life for all Sydneysiders and increase productivity for Sydney in the decades ahead,“ Mr Germaine said.
A report with respect to the findings and recommendations is being prepared to be submitted to government, and is expected to be available in October 2012. For more information, visit the RDA Sydney website.
