RDA Limestone Coast (South Australia) is supporting an idea to create a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) hub in south-east South Australia.

The District Council of Grant has joined with the jobs website The Resource Channel to make the Green Triangle region a hub for FIFO employees, which will greatly reduce the time that workers are away from their families.

RDA Limestone Coast acting Executive Officer Mike Ryan told ABC South East SA that the hub met one of the RDAs regional priorities to increase population growth.

“While it would be ideal to have people living and working in the region, rather than having people move away to work in the mining industry, we see this as an opportunity for them to live here, work away and then spend their money in local businesses and in our local community,” Mr Ryan said.

Mount Gambier-based air charter operation de Bruin Air already provides a FIFO service. Its managing director Jud Wheatley said the FIFO service was beneficial to both the workers and the mining companies.

“They're away from their families for less time and they get to get [to] sites on their time schedule, not waiting around airports and they can basically have less downtime on the flight while they're waiting to change shift,” Mr Wheatley said.
